Gas Scintillation Proportional Counters for High-Energy X-ray Astronomy
نویسندگان
چکیده
A focal plane array of high-pressure gas scintillation proportional counters (GSPC) for a balloon-borne hard-x-ray telescope is under development at the Marshall Space Flight Center. These detectors each have an active area of ~ 20 cm, and are filled with a high pressure (10 Pa) xenon-helium mixture. Imaging is via crossed-grid position-sensitive phototubes sensitive in the UV region. The performance of the GSPC is well matched to that of the telescope’s x-ray optics which have response to 75 keV and a focal spot size of ~ 500 μm. The detector’s energy resolution, 4% FWHM at 60 keV, is adequate for resolving the broad spectral lines of astrophysical importance and for accurate continuum measurements. Full details of the instrument and its performance will be provided.

A new method for pulse analysis of driftless-gas proportional scintillation counters
A new method for pulse analysis of driftless-gas proportional scintillation counters (GPSCs) is presented. With this method the requirement for additional analog or digital signal time-analysis and pulse-amplitude correction currently used is eliminated. In contrast to conventionaland driftless-GPSCs that have always relied on long shaping-time constants (several ms), the use of very short line...

The scientiic instrumentation on board the X-ray Astronomy Satellite BeppoSAX includes a Medium Energy Concentrator Spectrometer (MECS), operating in the energy range 1.3?10 keV, which consists of three units, each composed of a grazing incidence Mirror Unit and of a position sensitive Gas Scintillation Proportional Counter. The design and performance of the MECS instrument are here described, ...
متن کاملThe Energy Resolution of Xenon-Neon filled Gas Proportional-Scintillation Counters for X-Rays Below 2 keV
The energy spectra of x-rays with energies below 2 keV measured at atmospheric pressure with standard Xe gas detectors, such as gas proportional-scintillation counters (GPSC), exhibit distortions that are related to losses of electrons and fluorescence photons to the radiation window. In this work, a Monte Carlo simulation method that takes into account these losses investigates the use of Xe-N...

متن کاملSCINTILLATION PROPORTIONAL Xe COUNTER WITH WLS FIBER READOUT FOR LOW-ENERGY X-RAYS
A gas Xe based scintillation proportional counter with cylindrical geometry and wavelength shifting (WLS) fiber readout for X-rays of energy 0.5 − 100 keV is proposed. With such a design large sizes and sensitive area of the counter with a fairly well uniformity is possible. The counter could be used for ”dark matter” search and neutrino magnetic moment measurement and for detection of small am...
